We are proud to share that we have accepted the invitation from Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine to serve as a regional pediatric hub for medical student education in Palm Beach and Broward County.

We are excited to let our families know that our first medical student is already training with us this month, working closely under our direct supervision. Medical students may participate in visits by observing, assisting with histories, and learning about pediatric care, always with your child’s safety, privacy, and comfort as our top priorities.

We deeply appreciate our families’ support and collaboration as we help train the next generation of compassionate physicians.

Why Your Newborn Needs a Vitamin K Shot

Learn why vitamin K is essential for newborns and why the shot given at birth is a critical step in protecting your baby's health from day one.

What Is Vitamin K and Why Is It Important?

Vitamin K is a nutrient the body needs to form

          blood clots

—the ability to stop bleeding—and it supports healthy bone development.

Adults and older children get Vitamin K from food and from healthy gut bacteria. However,

newborns do not have enough Vitamin K in their bodies at birth

, and their intestines are not yet producing it.

           This is true for

newborns, regardless of the mother’s diet or the baby’s birth circumstances.

Why Does My Baby Need the Vitamin K Injection?

The Vitamin K injection prevents a serious and sometimes life-threatening condition called:

          Vitamin K Deficiency Bleeding (VKDB)

Without enough Vitamin K, a baby’s blood cannot clot properly. This can lead to bleeding:

About half of babies who develop VKDB experience brain bleeding

, which can lead to permanent disability or death.

Is the Vitamin K Shot Safe?

Yes. Vitamin K injections have been recommended by pediatricians since 1961 and are used safely worldwide.

A small study from the 1990s suggested a possible link to childhood cancer, but

dozens of high-quality studies since then have found no link.

The shot remains the safest and most effective way to prevent VKDB.

Why Children with Chronic Medical Conditions Should Attend Only Fully Vaccinated Daycares

          From a Pediatrician’s Perspective:

Children with chronic medical conditions or weakened immune systems face unique health challenges. As pediatricians, one of our top priorities is to protect these children from preventable diseases. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one of the most effective ways to safeguard them is ensuring they are in environments where all children are up to date on their immunizations.

          1. The Importance of Herd Immunity in Daycare Settings

Daycares are environments where children are in close contact, sharing toys, food surfaces, and engaging in daily playtime. Germs spread easily, even with good hygiene practices in place. Vaccines create a protective barrier called herd immunity, which helps stop the spread of contagious diseases like measles, whooping cough, or chickenpox.

When everyone in a daycare is vaccinated, it protects those who cannot fully protect themselves, including:

           Children with cancer undergoing chemotherapy

Kids with immune deficiencies or on immunosuppressive medications (e.g., for autoimmune diseases or organ transplants)

Premature infants who may not have developed full immunity

Children with chronic heart, lung, or metabolic conditions

          2. The Risks of Exposure in Non-Vaccinated Settings

The AAP emphasizes that vaccine-preventable diseases remain a real threat. Outbreaks of measles, pertussis (also known as whooping cough), and influenza have been linked to childcare centers where some children were not immunized.

For children with weak immune systems, even brief exposure can lead to severe illness, hospitalization, or death, since they may not respond as strongly to vaccines or cannot receive some vaccines safely.

          3. The AAP and CDC Recommendations

Both the AAP and CDC recommend that:

All children attending daycare or school should receive vaccines according to the CDC/AAP immunization schedule.

Daycare centers and schools should require documentation of up-to-date immunizations as a condition of admission.

This protects not only individual children but also the broader community. The AAP policy statement on “Immunization in Child Care and School Settings” explicitly supports mandatory immunization requirements to prevent disease outbreaks and safeguard vulnerable populations.

          4. Protecting Children with Special Health Needs

For parents of children with chronic illnesses—such as asthma, diabetes, congenital heart disease, or immune disorders—choosing a daycare that enforces the recommended vaccination schedule is not just a preference; it’s a medical necessity.

These children often experience more severe complications from common infections:

The flu can trigger severe asthma attacks or pneumonia.

Varicella (chickenpox) can lead to life-threatening bacterial infections.

Measles can cause encephalitis or hospitalization in immunocompromised children.

          5. Pediatrician’s Advice to Parents

As pediatricians, we encourage parents of medically fragile children to:

Verify vaccination policies before enrolling in daycare.

Ask if the daycare follows state and AAP immunization guidelines.

Choose facilities that do not accept non-medical vaccine exemptions.

          6. A Community Responsibility

Vaccination is not just a personal choice—it’s a shared responsibility to protect the most vulnerable members of our society.

When every family keeps their children up to date on vaccines, they contribute to a safe, healthy environment for all—especially for children who depend on others’ immunity for their protection.

          In summary:

Children with chronic medical problems or weakened immune systems should attend only those daycare centers that admit fully vaccinated children, according to AAP and CDC guidelines. This is a matter of medical safety, public health, and compassion—ensuring every child can grow and thrive in a safe environment.

          We hope this information helps.

Delaying the Hepatitis B vaccine puts children at serious risk. Learn the evidence-based reasons why early vaccination is essential for your child's health.

          Here are several re

asons, backed by evidence, why giving the HepB vaccine at birth (or very early) is beneficial and essential:

          1. Preventing mother-to-child transmission

          • If a mother has hepatitis B (HBV), she can pass the virus to her baby during delivery. Even in cases where the mother tests negative, testing isn’t perfect, and infections could be missed. The birth dose helps catch those cases early.

          • Without early vaccination, infants born to infected mothers are at high risk of chronic infection, which later can lead to severe liver disease, cirrhosis, or liver cancer.

          2. High risk of chronic disease when infection occurs early

          • Infants or young children who become infected with HBV are much more likely to develop chronic hepatitis B compared to adults. ACIP’s evidence shows ~90% of persons infected during infancy develop chronic infection, versus a much lower rate in adults.

          • Chronic HBV has severe long-term consequences (liver cancer, cirrhosis), hence prevention early in life is highly valuable.

          3. Effectiveness & safety of early vaccination

          • The vaccine is very safe; adverse events are rare and generally mild. No credible data show that giving the vaccine at birth is unsafe.

          • The earlier the vaccine is administered (especially in settings of maternal infection or unknown status), the better the prevention of infection. Delaying weakens that protection.

          4. Public health impact

          • Since universal newborn vaccination began, rates of hepatitis B in children have dropped drastically. The U.S. saw a nearly 99% decrease in pediatric cases as a result of universal infant vaccination.

          • Delaying the vaccine could lead to an increased risk of infections before vaccination occurs.

The proposal to delay until age 12

          • Donald Trump recently stated that he recommends delaying the hepatitis B vaccine until age 12. He is quoted as saying, “There’s no reason to give a baby that’s almost just born hepatitis B … So I would say wait until the baby is 12 years old.”

          • The justification he gave is that hepatitis B is sexually transmitted, so in his view, vaccinating infants (who aren’t sexually active) doesn’t make sense.

Why does the evidence not support waiting until age 12

Here are the major counterarguments, based on data and expert opinions:

          1. Infants can and do get infected

          • Infection can happen during childbirth from mothers who are HBV-positive. Even when mothers test negative, false negatives or late infections can occur. The birth dose provides an added margin of safety.

          • There are also non-sexual routes of transmission in early childhood (e.g. sharing items, cuts or scrapes, exposure to infected blood or bodily fluids).

          2. Risk of chronic infection is much higher in younger children

          • As noted, infants infected are far more likely to develop chronic disease, and that contributes to long-term morbidity and mortality. A delay until 12 means any exposure in the first 12 years isn’t prevented early.

          3. Delayed vaccination could result in missed doses / lower uptake

          • Administering the first dose at birth helps ensure that babies at least get one dose. If you wait until much later, there’s risk parents/staff might delay, skip, or not complete the series.

          4. Established safety and effectiveness

          • There is no credible scientific evidence that delaying the first dose until age 12 provides more safety or reduced adverse outcomes. On the contrary, the evidence supports early safety and effectiveness.

Are there any evidence-based reasons for delay?

          From what’s available publicly:

          • Some debate is underway about whether infants born to mothers known to be negative for HBV could have the first dose delayed slightly (e.g. to one month of age) without much risk. ACIP has postponed a vote about changing the recommendation for that group.

          • However, delaying until age 12 is much more severe and is not supported by evidence in expert guidelines or major peer-reviewed studies. The risk of disease and permanent consequences is too great, especially in infants and young children.

          • Pediatric infectious disease specialists say delaying until age 12 is “extremely dangerous,” “totally irresponsible,” given the risk of serious disease in infants.

          • Experts point out that before the universal birth dose policy was adopted, there were ~18,000 children per year in the U.S. infected before age 10.

          Summary

          • Strong evidence supports giving HepB vaccine at birth: to prevent early infection, especially from mother to child, to reduce chronic infection, and because the vaccine is safe.

          • Delaying until age 12 would leave children vulnerable for a long period during which they could acquire infection and suffer serious long-term consequences.

          • The idea of waiting until age 12 has no supporting evidence in current medical literature or guidelines; instead, it appears to reflect a misunderstanding of how hepatitis B is transmitted and the risks involved.

Why Does My Baby Get the Hepatitis B Vaccine at Birth?

What is Hepatitis B?
• Hepatitis B is a virus that attacks the liver.
• Babies who catch it at birth or in the first months of life usually don’t “clear” the infection.
• About 9 out of 10 infants infected at birth develop chronic hepatitis B, which can lead to liver damage, cirrhosis, or even liver cancer later in life.

How Can Babies Be Exposed?
• A mother may carry the virus without knowing it.
• Blood tests during pregnancy usually check for hepatitis B, but results can sometimes be missing, delayed, or even wrong.
• That’s why experts recommend protecting every newborn right away.

Why Give the Vaccine Within 24 Hours of Birth?

Acts as a safety net – protection begins immediately, even before we know the mother’s results.

Highly effective – when given in the first 24 hours, the vaccine significantly reduces the risk of lifelong infection.

Prevents missed opportunities – once the birth dose is given, we know your baby has that first layer of protection.

Is the Vaccine Safe for Newborns?

Yes! The hepatitis B vaccine has been used for decades and studied in millions of babies.

          • Most side effects are mild (a little soreness at the injection site, fussiness).

          • Serious reactions are extremely rare.

          What’s Next?

The birth dose is the first step. Your baby will complete the series with additional doses during the first year of life. After finishing, nearly all babies are fully protected.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends annual flu vaccination for all children six months and older — and for parents too. Getting vaccinated in September or October gives the body enough time to build protection before flu season peaks. Pediatric Dream Care makes it easy by offering flu shots for both kids and parents right here in our office.

Should Twins Share Class? Recommendations from Your Pediatrician

Wondering whether your twins should share a class? Explore the American Academy of Pediatrics' evidence-based recommendations to help you make the best choice.

Whether twins should share a classroom is a deeply personal decision that depends on each pair's unique personalities and dynamic. Keeping twins together can offer comfort and emotional support, particularly in the early years of preschool and kindergarten, while separation tends to encourage independence, individual friendships, and personal growth — and can reduce tension for twins who are naturally competitive with one another. Research shows no significant academic difference either way, so the decision often comes down to the children's temperaments and needs. Younger twins may benefit most from being together, while separate classrooms are often introduced later to help each child build their own identity. Some families even alternate between the two approaches year by year. Ultimately, experts agree that parents — who know their children best — should make this decision in close consultation with the school.

Benefits of Dressing Siblings in Matching Outfits

Dressing siblings in similar or matching outfits offers several advantages for families. Learn about the benefits and tips from Pediatric Dream Care.

Dressing twins in matching or identical clothing offers a range of practical and social benefits for the whole family. From a daily routine standpoint, choosing one outfit instead of two reduces decision fatigue, speeds up morning prep, and simplifies laundry. In busy public spaces like parks or airports, matching outfits make it significantly easier to keep visual track of both children — and if one twin goes missing, the other serves as an immediate reference for authorities. Identical clothing also eliminates potential arguments over who has the "better" outfit, and buying two of the same item is often faster and more cost-effective. Beyond the practical perks, many parents feel that matching attire helps celebrate the unique bond and shared identity that makes twinhood so special, while also drawing warm attention from others and creating a timeless, cohesive look in family portraits and holiday photos.

They also need a sports physical to clear them to return to their activities if they suffer an injury or become ill during the season.

The purpose of a sports physical is to be sure your child can safely participate in sports. Suddenly starting high-intensity workouts and engaging in competitive sports can quickly aggravate a pre-existing problem or lead to a preventable injury when an exam discovers potential problems.

Although a sports physical may find a problem that prevents your child from participating, in most cases, the examination results guide decisions. The exam reveals problems that can be treated before your child starts a sport, and shows if your child needs extra training to get in shape to safely participate.

When Can Family Members Kiss the Baby? AAP Guidance

The AAP advises waiting at least 2–3 months before allowing family to kiss a newborn, especially during RSV and flu season. Learn why this protects your baby.

When is it considered okay to have close family members kiss the baby?

The short answer is to wait until the baby is 3 months old. The longer answer is as follows: The AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) generally advises parents and siblings to avoid kissing newborns, especially on the face, for the first few months of life due to their still-developing immune systems.

While the AAP doesn't mention a specific age for when it's okay to start kissing a baby, most experts recommend waiting at least 2-3 months, or even longer during RSV, flu, and cold season.

Happy 4th of July from our pediatric office! We wish that your family has a joyful and safe holiday filled with fun and celebration! As you enjoy the festivities, please remember some key safety tips, especially for young ones:

          Fireworks safety

: The safest way to enjoy fireworks is by attending a public display run by professionals. If consumer fireworks are used at home, remember they can be dangerous and should always be handled by responsible adults. Keep children at a safe distance and never let them play with or ignite fireworks, including sparklers, which can cause severe burns. Always have a bucket of water or a hose nearby, and never try to relight a "dud."

          Sun safety

: Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and reapply every 2 hours. Keep children hydrated, especially when spending time outdoors in the heat. Dress them in lightweight, light-colored clothing and hats to protect them from the sun's harmful rays. Water safety: Always supervise children closely when they're near water, whether it's a pool, lake, or ocean. Consider using life jackets if boating or swimming in deep water.

          Food Safety

: When grilling, follow safe grilling practices, such as thoroughly cleaning the grill before use, grilling outdoors only, and keeping children and pets at a safe distance. Ensure food is cooked correctly and stored to prevent foodborne illness.

We hope that you have an excellent and healthy 4th of July celebration!

(AAP) generally recommends delaying air travel for newborns, particularly within the first 7 days of life, and advises against flying with a baby under two months old if possible. If travel is unavoidable within two months, consult with the baby's pediatrician. For all flights, the AAP strongly advises that babies and young children should be secured in FAA-approved car seats or other approved restraint systems, rather than being held in a parent's lap.
